In 1983, my father, Herve Mehu, moved his multimedia art gallery from Petitionville, Haiti to New York City’s Upper West Side. Ever since then, Mehu Gallery has been a magnetic attraction for artists, and patrons of the arts from just about everywhere. The institution is affectionately known as "The gateway to Harlem.” It has persevered through 4 decades of physical and demographic change to the landscape of the city and local uptown arts and entertainment community. It has remained steadfast in its place as a cultural staple of upper Manhattan. The passing of its founder, Herve Mehu, signifies the passing of the mantle. Sidney Mehu, Herve’s son, is fully prepared to pick up the torch and carry it forward across the bridge of time.
The Mehu Gallery has exhibited digital arts and entertainment from artists from the world over, including James Denmark, Eric Girault, Dinga McCannon, Frank Robuste, Patricia Wynne, Jeannne Schneider, Twin Seven Seven, and many more. With the support of the board, its longtime patrons, and the greater community, the Mehu Gallery is positioned to expand its scope and impact going forward.
I emigrated from Haiti to the U.S. at the age of 3. I spent my childhood exploring my father’s art gallery in Manhattan. After NYU film school, I began my career as an artist and media entrepreneur. I created MultiHop, a multimedia project focused on international hip hop culture. I transitioned to teaching video production in public schools to empower underserved youth to tell their stories. I’ve also worked in partnership with Title I under-resourced public schools and community centers to conduct virtual reality & augmented reality instruction.
These art forms have great potential for the future of diversity, inclusion and equity, education, marketing, ecommerce, and many other fields. I’ve collaborated with artists from various disciplines, and produced promotional and educational media materials for underserved schools and nonprofits. I am fortunate enough to continue my father’s legacy, I want to include giving an artistic voice to marginalized people of all ages in disinvested communities.
